Day Cycle 6*

I begin this record by recounting the events of the past six night-day cycles. My arrival was dogged by cold and snow: an early winter for someone like me who had come from milder temps. The front door of my home opened on to an abattoir, and the unexpected stench of death assailed and surprised me so that I was paralysed upon the threshold as my way home shut behind me. I cannot begin to fathom the method used to transport me to this place, filled with truly monstrous beings and other captives. There was snow on the walls and shadows in the mirrors; slavering beings with mouths but no heads roaming in the corridor. To find that a nightmare of Lovecraft's had come to life would not have surprised me.

The night seemed to drag on interminably. I do not sleep often, but even I was forced to secure a safe resting place for myself. I thought it my imagination then.

But with the chiming of a clock close to dawn, the urge to sleep overcame all. Though not tired in the slightest, I too succumbed. Upon waking, it was already well into the morning.

The monsters had vanished. The place was bright and airy. There was a sense of safety that had not been present - a mere lack of dangerous presences, I assumed. The daylight hours we had dragged on longer than had the night prior, and it was then I realised that it was not my imagination - the cycles did not obey a 24-hour schedule.

* I count from post-arrival. Perhaps I should label it 'PA', or 'AA' - After Arrival? - from now on.

( There's a gap here. A break between his writing due to interruption. )

I saw nothing much of note that day. Or rather, I saw much that I'd like to remark upon, but being new to this world, I was at a loss as to what constituted the 'norm'. Suffice to say the snow lingered for the duration of that day, and the following night.

The second night, the night filled with snow, I experienced saw I and all the other inhabitants in chains. Not a pleasant way to wake. At first I thought that all I had seen was a dream and that I had been apprehended by the MWPSB. I cannot say whether I felt relieved or disappointed to find myself proven wrong.

Apparently, this transition was a welcome gift of sorts. I hadn't been here long, but I'm fairly sure this house was a new addition. It's rotten and fallen to pieces unlike the other four. An unpleasant place to spend the night, I must say. We all were confined thus for another two cycles. I'm not sure I wish for a repeat of the experience.

I shall skip to the present day. The horrors are too many to describe, and I believe in focusing on what is to come rather than what was. The nights are horrendous, but bearable if you have the right instincts. It's safer to avoid engaging any unusual being that you see roaming the halls, or inside a room. Some bring safety; others bring death.

There was a masque ball last night.
